Studio Diary:

Set up the studio

I’m setting up my new studio. I feel really lucky to have found a place with good heating — I honestly can’t work somewhere that’s too cold. The warmth already makes it feel a bit like home. I brought three big suitcases with me, packed with all my things. It feels like I’m slowly moving my whole little world into this space.

Pink Pink Pink

For the painting I didn’t finish for the summer show, I decided to paint the whole wall pink and place all my works on it. It completely changed the atmosphere of the space — it feels playful and fresh.

Scooter Day

Last week, I was waiting for the bus to go to school. I waited for twenty minutes, but it never came, and I was about to be late for my tutorial. Just then, my boyfriend walked by on his way to play football. He asked why I was still there, and when I told him about the bus, he offered to give me a ride on his scooter. I didn’t even know before that it’s a kind of transportation that needs a driving licence to sign up for! I said yes and stood behind him — it was a bit scary but also really fun. Somehow, I even arrived five minutes early.

New Reference: Seonhee Jung

When I think about simplifying the subjects in my paintings, I’m reminded of an artist I saw at the Slade MFA show — Seonhee. Some of her works seemed to be about love and romance, maybe even a touch of fantasy. But what I really admire is how she simplifies her main themes. She uses very few colours and keeps her forms abstract, but everything still feels emotional and complete. It makes me think about how I can express more by showing less.
